Great grandmother Betty Morris, 100, celebrated her '25th' birthday on Saturday's extra leap year day.

Morris was born on February 29, 1920, but due to her birthday falling on a day that comes around every four years, she has only been able to celebrate on her actual day of birth 25 times.

Her son Peter, 76, joked to Metro News that Morris is "50 years younger than me".

Morris, a former hairdresser who lives in Buckhurst, Sussex, also has a daughter Jacqueline with her late husband Harry.

Harry passed away in 2014 at the age of 86. The two had known each other since Morris was a teenager and married in 1940.

On Saturday she celebrated her new milestone with a family party with her children, grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She also revealed her secret to a long life which is never saying no to anything.

"I've always been game. I think that's the secret to a long life," she told Metro News.

"It is ridiculous to think I’m 25, but I will still give the youngsters a run for their money. There are a lot of people out there who don’t look after themselves and self-respect is important to have a long and happy life," reported Metro News.

It is estimated that five million people celebrate their birthday on the extra leap year day.

Leap year days only occur every four years and have 366 days of the year for the calendar to be aligned correctly with the seasons as the earth orbits the sun for approximately 365.25 days.
