Madeleine McCann expert says evidence points to suspect's involvement

An expert in the Madeleine McCann case says the evidence points to the new German suspect being involved in her disappearance.

Mccann, 3, went missing from her family's apartment in Portugal while on holiday in 2007.

Her parents were dining in a nearby bar and when they returned found Madeleine missing.

The disappearance sparked an international search but she has never been found.

American journalist Robbyn Swan, and co-author of Looking for Madeleine, says 43-year-old german man Christian Brückner was likely involved.

"I think you are looking at the new evidence which has come forward about three weeks ago the german police came forward and announced that they had a new suspect," she told The AM Show on Wednesday.

"That suspect, with whom there has been a considerable interest since, is a convicted pedophile and has been convicted of several sex crimes against children.

"The other fact that we know about him is that on the night of Madeleine McCann's disappearance back in 2007, the phone registered in his name was being used in Praia da Luz an hour before Madeleine disappeared."

Brückner lived in the Portugese area 1995 and 2007 and had vehicles seen nearby on the night of McCann's disappearance. He also had a history of breaking into hotels and committing criminal offences to supplement his lifestyle.

Brückner's reported to currently being in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005 and has previous convictions for sexual contact.

Swan said two reliable witnesses had also identified a man who was loitering in the area around the time of Madeleine's disappearance as having facial scarring.

"The photographs one has and the descriptions one has of Christian B, the suspect, is that he is a heavily pockmarked man. In other words it's possibly from a case of adolescent acne, but his skin is very marked."

Swan says the German authorities are yet to question Christian as the prosecutors are being "extremely cautious" about giving him any information.
