'Heroic' police officer pulls man in wheelchair off tracks seconds before train passes

Dramatic footage shows a Californian police officer pulling a man out of a wheelchair seconds before a train passed.

Erika Urrea was patrolling Lodi on Wednesday morning when she saw an elderly man in a wheelchair who appeared to be stuck on railroad tracks.

Video from Urrea's body cam posted by the Lodi Police Department shows the train arriving just seconds after she hauled him from the chair.

"A northbound train was traveling pretty fast, and she rushed over to get him unstuck," Sgt Steve Maynard told reporters on Wednesday.

"She only had a few seconds, and for some reason, she couldn't get the chair loose, so she grabbed hold of him and hauled him from the chair," he told Lodi News

Urrea was able to pull the man out of the wheelchair and they both fell onto the ground.

The 66-year-old man was immediately taken to hospital with a leg injury, police said. He is in a critical but stable position.

"Officer Urrea risked her own life to save another and her actions prevented a tragedy today," the post said.

"We are extremely proud of Officer Erica Urrea and her heroism."
