Cat and mouse strike up unlikely friendship on the streets of China

A real-life cat and mouse have been compared to cartoon characters Tom and Jerry after striking up an unlikely friendship.

The animals were captured by a local playing together on a street in Xiangyang, China on Sunday.

The black cat is originally seen chasing the mouse which scurries away down the street.

But after giving up the chase, the cat lays down and the mouse comes forward to cuddle into its belly.

The video, which was posted to Chinese social media website Weibo, has been viewed thousands of times.

"They seem to be getting along even better than Tom and Jerry!" one commenter wrote.

"This is another example of true love. Love can cross any hurdles of skin colours, race, gender, and now even species!" another said.

Clinical animal behaviour counsellor Caroline Clark told MailOnline the mouse can be seen freezing at the beginning of the video, which is likely because it is scared.

"This is a reaction to fear but is also a strategy used by many animals to try and stop the chase in the hope that the aggressor will leave them alone.

"It makes no sense to put itself in danger and in my opinion, the fact that it inadvertently runs under the cat's belly is more about it being shocked, disorientated and therefore not thinking rationally."
