Nagorno-Karabakh: Azerbaijan armed forces release metal song amid deadly dispute with Armenia

Azerbaijan might not have the world's strongest army, but there's no longer any doubt they have the most powerful rock band.

The country's State Border Service has uploaded a slick music video to its official YouTube channel, showing off not just its military hardware but its heaviest seven-string metal riffs.

'Atəş', which translates into English as 'Fire', is performed by local musicians Ceyhun Zeynalov and Narmin Karimbayova, backed by the Nur Group. The pair dress up in full combat uniforms to deliver the track, which is reminiscent of German metal veterans Rammstein and English prog-rockers Muse.

They're flanked by helicopters, trucks, tanks and mobile missile launchers. Halfway through the video the action kicks up a gear, finally delivering on the song's title in a flurry of missiles and gunfire.

It's never quite clear what they're shooting at, the action largely taking place in wide open plains with no visible enemy. In real-life, Azerbaijan is in a long-running conflict with its neighbour Armenia. Violence between the two has flared up recently, with reports of more than 100 dead in the latest fighting.

'Atəş' is not the first song the State Border Service has done - in 2018 it released 'Ways of the Queen', which also featured Narmin Karimbayova on vocals. That track - which also features the Nur Group with a video that focuses more on the country's naval prowess - is more in the Bon Jovi mould, featuring cheesy guitar solos and '80s-style keyboards.

The track comes a month after the Turkish military released a rap song. Turkey and Azerbaijan are military allies.

After one person posted the Azerbaijan clip to Twitter, others uploaded other military-approved music videos, including a pop song by the Syrian Armed Forces and a '90s-style rap by the Russian military.

The Armeninan Border Guard does not appear to have a YouTube channel or any music videos.

According to globalfirepower.com, Azerbaijan has the 64th strongest military in the world.

Karimbayova reportedly found fame on TV singing show The Voice of Azerbaijan
