A man has died after an alleged one-punch attack in Brisbane, Australia following the State of Origin final.

Local police say a 29-year-old man allegedly hit a 49-year-old man in the face outside the Sundowner Hotel in Caboolture, north Brisbane, at about 10pm (local time). A group had gathered at the hotel earlier to watch the match.

Senior Sergeant Trevor Deegan said the older man fell backwards after being punched and hit his head on the concrete. Paramedics performed CPR but he was pronounced dead at 11pm.

The other man was arrested and charged with unlawful striking causing death, according to 7 News.

"As far as I'm aware these two don't know each other," Deegan said.

"The football wouldn't have been long finished at that stage [when the attack happened]."

The man was due to appear in the Caboolture Magistrates Court on Thursday.
