German police are investigating the disappearance of a giant wooden penis, which vanished from the mountain it suddenly appeared on several years ago.

The two-metre phallus seems to have been chopped down, leaving just a pile of sawdust in its wake, reports German newspaper Allgaeuer Zeitung.

It sat atop southern Bavaria's Grünten mountain, and had attained cult celebrity status with hikers often visiting the icon of male genitalia.

Local legend has it the 200kg statue appeared on the mountain after it was commissioned as a gift for a young man whose family didn't appreciate it, reports The Guardian.

German news agency dpa reports Bavarian police in the nearby town of Kempten are investigating the mysterious disappearance, but it is unclear if a crime has been committed.

The owner of the sculpture is unknown. It's not clear when it was erected.

Odd sculptures have been in headlines recently after a mysterious monolith in the Utah desert was discovered, then removed in mysterious circumstances. The Utah Department of Public Safety discovered the 3m-tall object while counting bighorn sheep from a helicopter.

The discovery sparked an internet challenge as people tried to locate the structure, but those looking now will be out of luck.

On Sunday Utah's Bureau of Land Management said it had received reports the monolith was removed by "an unknown party".
