'Zombie Angelina Jolie' sentenced to 10 years in Iranian prison

An Iranian woman who rose to fame for looking like a 'zombie Angelina Jolie' and 'corpse bride' has been sentenced to a decade in prison.

Sahar Tabar, whose real name is Fatemeh Khishvand, became well-known for her extremely gaunt appearance in 2017 which she documented on social media.

Tabar was said to be obsessed with looking like Tomb Raider star Jolie and reportedly used prosthetics, heavy makeup and editing to achieve the look.

However in October 2019, Tabar was arrested after members of the public made complaints about her behaviour, Iranian news agency Tasnim reported.

She was charged with blasphemy, instigating violence, illegally acquiring property, violating the Muslim country's dress code and encouraging young people to commit corruption. All the charges stemmed from her social media activity.

Two of the charges against her were cleared and Tabar was reportedly hoping for a pardon, the Guardian reported.

But in December, Tabar was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Iranian Journalist Masih Alinejad shared the news on Twitter, calling for help from Jolie.

"Sahar Tabar is only 19. Her joke landed her in jail," she wrote.

"Her mother cries every day to get her innocent daughter freed. Dear Angelina Jolie! We need your voice here. Help us."

The Guardian reported Iranian state television had broadcast Tabar's remorseful confession in late October 2019 which drew sympathy.

The broadcast described Tabar as "a victim with an abnormal personality and mental state" who sought "vulgarity" on social media.

Medical records also showed she had a history of mental illness and had previously visited psychiatric hospitals.
