Teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg has released a new video urging viewers to adopt a plant-based diet.

The video, titled #ForNature and released on Twitter to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity, is a direct into-the-camera call to action from the young environmental activist who said that "we have industrialised life on earth."

"Cutting down forests and destroying habitats, we are creating the perfect conditions for diseases to spill over from one animal to another, and to us."

She said that, by changing our behaviours, another global disease outbreak like COVID-19 - which is believed to have transferred from bats to humans through another animal - could be prevented in the future.

"The next pandemic could be much, much worse, but we can change."

"If we don't change, we are f***ed."

Thunberg, who famously sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York to reduce the emissions of her travel, produced the video in collaboration with animal rights charity Mercy for Animals.

She ends the video by calling for an overhaul of the way humanity produces food.

"If we keep making food the way we do, we will also [be] driving countless species to extinction. This really sucks for us too. They are our life supporting system."

"It doesn't have to be like this."

"We know what we can do."
