Police are investigating reports of a man being set on fire outside of a soup kitchen in Perth.

The 68-year-old was rushed to hospital with significant burns after he was approached by another man in the inner-metro suburb of Highgate at around 5pm on Saturday, police say.

He reportedly lit up in flames as the man who had approached him fled.

According to 7News, the man had been doused in petrol and set alight. A witness says those at the kitchen got him into a shower before ambulance officers arrived.

Police confirmed several onlookers helped to extinguish the flames. The man's burns were centered around his hands and face.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident and are currently looking for witnesses.
