A chaotic brawl between a young woman and police during Australian New Year's Eve celebrations has been caught on camera.

Footage of the dramatic fight has been circulating online showing the young woman taking on a group of officers on Elizabeth Street in Melbourne's CBD at around 2:20am on January 1.

In the video, a blonde woman in a white dress is seen screaming and punching one officer.

Two other people that appear to be her friends join in the scuffle but are quickly pulled off by a group of police officers who come to their colleague's rescue.

The woman proceeds to kick and shove officers as they try to detain her. Eventually, one cop grabs the woman by her ponytail and pulls her to the ground.

She is then put in handcuffs and taken away by the police.

Victoria police said there were several incidents across the city as Aussies brought in the new year.

According to news.com.au over 4500 police were deployed across the state on New Year's Eve and 49 arrests were made.

"This was one [arrest] up on last year, which is quite remarkable compared to the number of people out and about," Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Rick Nguent told the outlet.
