Australian police officer charged with manslaughter over Clare Nowland's taser death

An Australian police officer accused of tasering an elderly woman who later died has been charged with manslaughter. 

Senior Constable Kristian White entered a nursing home in May after reports 95-year-old Clare Nowland was holding a knife. 

The woman had allegedly been walking around Yallambee Lodge in Cooma while holding two kitchen knives. 

She reportedly threw one knife at a staff member after being asked to hand the knives over but missed. 

Police eventually arrived, where White, 33, allegedly tasered the great-grandmother. 

White has been accused of tasering the woman, causing her to fall and hit her head on a wooden floor. 

The fall resulted in an 8cm bruise on the back of her head and an inoperable brain bleed. 

Nowland died in hospital one week later. 

White was charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault. 

On Wednesday morning, NSW Police additionally charged White with manslaughter. 

He has been suspended from duty and remains on bail until his court appearance on December 6.
