An Australian woman has apologised after video footage of her driving with an unrestrained child on her windscreen shocked residents.

On Sunday, witnesses filmed the moment the boy was spotted lying face-down on the moving vehicle.

The young boy can be seen on the windscreen, clinging to the roof of the vehicle driving through Melbourne's Pakenham, before climbing up and making his way inside through the open sunroof.

The 27-year-old woman who was driving the car handed herself in to police on Monday, according to 7News.

She apologised for putting her friend's child in danger and claimed the 11-year-old had slipped through the sunroof.

"I understand the seriousness of the situation and take full responsibility," she told 7News. "Kids being kids, they climb up the roof really quick."

The woman said she "quickly parked the car" and asked the boy to come inside.

Witnesses who confronted the driver say she was doing laps of the street and was laughing when she was motioned to pull over.

One man who spoke with 7News said he parked his car across the road to stop the woman from driving further.

"I basically had a go at her, and she laughed at me," the man revealed.

Several residents who witnessed the moment were afraid the young boy could fall off and be run over, according to Australian media.

The woman has been charged with seven driving offences including reckless conduct endangering life and serious injury, driving in a dangerous manner, driving at a dangerous speed and using an unregistered vehicle.

The woman is due to appear in court in February 2024.
