Scorching hot weather has closed schools in Australia due to the threat of bushfires.

A dangerous wave of heat is pushing temperatures into the 40s.

But a cyclone off Queensland's coast is also posing a huge worry.

On a sweltering hot day, just ask the locals and they'll tell you it's well and truly Esky, bathers and thongs weather today.

And while it's hot, it's about to get even hotter, with temperatures forecast in the mid-40Cs on Saturday.

The memory of when the weather was last this extreme is seared into the minds of many, when it ignited one of the worst bushfires in Australia's modern history.

Health authorities have warned about the risk to life as well, and have advised people to avoid going outside or exercising when it's too hot.
