A theme park experience took a terrifying turn for some on Australia's Gold Coast on Friday after they found themselves stuck when the ride ground to a halt.

The group was riding Movie World's DC Rivals Hypercoaster, the tallest rollercoaster in the Southern Hemisphere, when it suddenly froze.

Maintenance workers subsequently raced to get the passengers back to the ground.

A Movie World spokesperson said the ride stopped due to a scarf becoming tangled up in a wheel.

"The ride operator and the ride's safety systems have done what they are trained and designed to do and all the guests on board are safe with the ride vehicle stopped in a designated zone," the spokesperson said, as reported by 7 News.

"Our team exited the guests down the lift hill which is a process we regularly train for and simply requires the guests to walk down the stairs to the load station."
