A plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Hamburg, Germany after a coffee machine on board seriously malfunctioned.

Lufthansa flight LH818 departed Frankfurt, Germany on Saturday, March 9 with the destination Gothenburg, Sweden originally planned.

However, according to The Aviation Herald, while the flight was still ascending cockpit crew declared an air emergency and prioritised landing.

There were reports of smoke originating from the forward galley of the plane's interior.

The Airbus A319 touched down in Hamburg safely and all passengers were unharmed.

Upon investigation, technicians found that a defective coffee machine was behind the galley smoke.

Passengers continued their journey on a replacement aircraft shortly after.

According to data from radarbox.com, the plane remained grounded in Hamburg for the rest of the night following the incident but was back in operation the day after.

Lufthansa told NationalWorld "there was no danger to the passengers or crew at any time during the flight" and the plane "landed normally".
