Australian police hunt men blamed for fuelling riots after Sydney church stabbing

Australian police are on the hunt for a group of men blamed for fuelling violent riots after an alleged terrorist attack in Sydney.

Three men have already been arrested, but police are calling on the public to help identify a further 11. Photos of the individuals have been taken from police-worn body cameras and iPhone video during last Sunday's riots.

"Their actions at the time influenced others to take action at that time," Superintendent Andrew Evans said. "There were people who went there deliberately to start matters with police."

The riots broke out after Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was allegedly stabbed six times by a 16-year-old during a Sunday service. Members of the wider Assyrian community gathered outside the Christ the Good Shepherd Church wanting revenge for the attack.

One week on, tensions are still high in the community. A police presence remains outside the Western Sydney church with Bishop Emmanuel recovering at a secret location.

Images of the men were released just hours after a vigil was held at Bondi Beach to remember the six people killed in a stabbing attack at Bondi Junction Westfield mall.

Inspector Amy Scott, who shot and killed Joel Cauchi inside the mall, attended alongside Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

"We mourn for all the years of joy they should have known all the memories they should have had the chance to make," Albanese said.
