Jordan Nelson, sentenced today to 18 years in prison, joins a chilling list of teenagers convicted of murder in New Zealand.
Murder
- Jordan Nelson (13) – Nelson murdered his 50-year-old caregiver Rosemaree Kurth at a remote Taranaki farm following a row abut a TV receiver. (April, 2012)
- Wellington schoolboy (13) – A 13-year-old Wellington schoolboy was convicted of murder after stabbing nurse Rachel Bennett 16 times. He was granted permanent name suppression (May, 1991)
- Renee Kara O’Brien (14) – Murdered Waitara truck driver Kenneth Piggott (February 2003)
- Courtney Patricia Churchwood (16), Lori-lea Waiora Te Wini (14) – Murdered retired Opotiki school teacher John Rowe in his home (2008)
- Kori Trevithick (15) –Trevithick stabbed 77-year-old Doreen Reed over 21 times as she slept in her bed at her Birkdale home (January 13, 2007)
- Jache Broughton (15) – Broughton beat 27-year-old Scottish tourist Karen Aim to death with a baseball bat. Twelve days before, Broughton beat 19-year-old Zara Schofield on the head with a rock. Broughton was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a 12 ½ year minimum non-parole period. (January 16, 2008)
- Petani Fa’avae (16) – Fa’avae stabbed 14-year-old Manaola Kaumeafaiva to death outside Avondale College during a church dance. He was jailed for 11 years. (October, 2007)
- Alexander Peihopa (16), Whatarangi Rawiri (17) – Guilty of murdering pizza delivery driver Michael Choy (September, 2001)
- James Hamilton, Hori Slade (both 17) – Convicted of murdering Whangarei forestry worker Richard Harcombe (May, 2004)
- John Michael Jaymain Wharekura (17) – Stabbed Tanya Burr to death at her Rotorua flat (August, 2003)
Manslaughter
- Bailey Junior Kurariki (12) – Kurariki took part in the fatal beating of 40-year-old pizza delivery man Michael Choy. Charged with murder, Kurariki was later convicted of manslaughter. (September, 2001)
- Kalem Ames (14) – Ames stabbed 22-year-old Tokoroa man Shayne Pita Walker to death. Charged with murder, Ames was later found guilty of manslaughter. (January 26, 2008)
- Puti Irene Health Maxwell, Kararina Makere Te Tauna (14) – Convicted of manslaughter of Kenneth Piggott. Friend Renee Kara O’Brien was convicted of murder. (February, 2003)
- Ngatai Rewiti (14) – Convicted of manslaughter after dropping a concrete slab from an Auckland motorway overbridge onto the car of Christopher Currie (July, 2006).
- Rua Edwardson (16) – Found guilty of the manslaughter of former friend Melissa Puhi (March, 2007)
