BlackBerry hopes it's hip to be square

BlackBerry is trying to reinvent itself in the tough smartphone market as it goes head to head with Apple's popular iPhone 6.

Its latest offering is the Passport, which has the trademark physical keyboard and a distinctive large square screen.

But with less than 1 percent market share, can BlackBerry's latest device restore the company's former glory?

Probably not, says technology blogger Bill Bennett – though it might appeal to workplaces "where people still wear ties".

"Finance industry people, people who need security in government and so on – and that's probably why Obama still has his."

The Passport is good for reading spreadsheets and documents, but not for watching video, limiting its appeal – especially since it costs about the same as the iPhone 6.

Elsewhere in tech, Western Digital has released a wireless hard drive – it's about the same size as the Passport, but holds 2TB of data.
