Enough new homes have been consented in New Zealand over the past six months to cover Wellington Airport twice over, new statistics show.

Between January and June this year, 12,057 new dwellings worth almost $4 billion have been consented.

Statistics New Zealand says the new building consent figures show the total floor area of the dwellings covers 221 hectares.

Auckland has led the charge in terms of consent increases with an 18 percent increase to 704 consents in June this year.

This is compared to a national increase of 2 percent and a 13 percent reduction in Canterbury in the same period.

However, in seasonally adjusted terms, the national figure of 2042 was down 4.1 percent from May this year.

The total value of consents for June added up to $1.3 billion, split into $832 million for residential and $454 million for non-residential buildings.
