Forbes has released its 2016 list of the world's highest-paid actresses - and once again Jennifer Lawrence is at the top. The Oscar-winning star earned US$46 million (NZ$65 million) for the year.

Lawrence earned most of her money from the final film in the Hunger Games series, as well as a massive payout for her upcoming film Passengers. However, her earnings are down from 2015, with a 11.5 percent decrease.

This was still more than $13m more than the next highest, Melissa McCarthy, who earned US$33m (NZ$45m).

McCarthy was helped by her windfall role in Ghostbusters, which pushed her above Scarlett Johansson in the rankings.

While Hollywood continues to be the home for the rich and famous, other countries showed the success of their film industries, with Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, South African citizen Charlize Theron, and India's Deepika Padukone on the list.

However, with the list of highest paid actors yet to be released, it remains to be seen how much of a gender pay gap still exists, even for the women at the top of the film industry.
