British rockers Alt-J have announced guitarist and bassist Gwil Sainsbury has quit the band.

The 2012 Mercury Prize winners dropped the news on their Twitter.com account on Saturday, insisting Sainbury's decision to leave was for personal reasons.

The band writes, "With regret, Gwil is leaving alt-J. This is purely a personal decision and as our best friend we support him completely."

It is unclear what remaining members Joe Newman, Thom Green and Gus Unger-Hamilton plan to do to replace Sainsbury.
