It's been 20-years today since one of New Zealand's most memorable comedians passed away.

Billy T was eulogised as the comedian who taught us to laugh at ourselves.

He started his career in the seventies by joining the Maori Volcanics Show band performing around the world.

He then went on to star in a number of comedy sketches, films and TV shows, including his last television performance - the hour long The Billy T James Show Christmas special in 1990.

Billy T was the nation's 14th recipient of a heart transplant, but died at just 42.
