Hip-hop legend Common is returning to New Zealand to perform at Wellington's TSB Bank Arena on May 11, with support from Talib Kweli.

Common's career spans a quarter of a century and has earned him four Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, BET Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and more.

He was last in New Zealand in 2014 for Soulfest, but the upcoming Wellington performance will be his first headline show in the country.

In addition to his impressive haul of accolades and achievements in music, Common is also a human rights activist who is regularly seen on US TV and in the media discussing community issues including mass incarceration, economic equality and police brutality.

He has also featured in a number of films, TV shows and videogames, including Selma, NBA 2K8, Hell on Wheels, Suicide Squad, American Gangster, Terminator Salvation and Smokin' Aces.

Brooklyn-based rapper Talib Kweli is regular visitor to New Zealand and known for putting on a great live show. Like Common, he is active in social justice causes, and once had a feisty exchange with CNN journalist Don Lemon during a live interview about the protests in Ferguson, Missouri.

Tickets go on sale on March 31.
