Actor Damian Lewis was honoured by Britain's Prince William during a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace in London on Wednesday.

The Homeland star was given the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal by the royal for his successful acting career across the globe.

Dressed in a smart morning suit and accompanied by his wife Helen McCrory, he was congratulated by the prince at the investiture ceremony.

Speaking after the event, Lewis revealed he was shocked to be honoured, saying, "I was stupefied, I had no idea, so it was a big, big surprise... I remember when I heard I was being awarded it, it was a little bit like 'now you've got to prove it'. It was a bit like being asked to be a [school] prefect, now I have to be extremely responsible."

Lewis also gave an insight into his chat with the royal, adding, "He said, 'Catherine [Duchess of Cambridge] and I are huge Homeland fans'. He said, 'You appeared again the other night briefly, and we all got very excited,' which is true, but it was also on Sunday night which means he is absolutely up to date with the latest episode and I'm amazed they have time for that."
