David Bowie used the Mercury Prize award ceremony in London on Wednesday to showcase his new music video, which cost just US$12.99 (£8.60) to make.

The Ziggy Stardust icon was up for the prestigious honour for his album, New Day, alongside artists including Arctic Monkeys, Laura Mvula, Jake Bugg and James Blake, who took home the $30,000 (£20,000) awardfor his record, Overgrown.

Bowie didn't attend the event at London's Roundhouse venue, but debuted the promo for his new single 'Love Is Lost'.

In the simple footage, Bowie cradles a puppet similar to one of the stars of his 1980 video for 'Ashes to Ashes'.

The legend reveals he created the promo over a weekend with just his assistant Jimmy King on camera, all for the price of $12.99.

A post on his website reads, "The result of this speedy production is a strangely moving gothic inflected storyline perfect for Halloween. And the cost? Just $12.99 for the thumb drive to download the finished video on."
