Dead or Alive singer Pete Burns has died, aged 57.

The flamboyant frontman died of a heart attack, according to a post on his official Twitter account.

"All of his family and friends are devastated by the loss of our special star," the message from management said. "He was a true visionary, a beautiful talented soul, and he will be missed by all who loved and appreciated everything he was and all of the wonderful memories that he has left us with."

Dead or Alive was formed in 1980, and hit the bigtime with 1985's 'You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)', the first number one for 1980s production maestros Stock Aitken Waterman.

Burns later underwent hundreds of surgeries which dramatically changed his appearance, and starred in a number of reality television shows.
