Troubled pop star Kanye West was handcuffed to a stretcher and hospitalised after his personal doctor told emergency staff he may become violent, according to reports.

In audio of the LA emergency services dispatch calls obtained by Dan News, a "psychiatric emergency" is described.

Kanye was said to be at his trainer Harley Pasternak's house when he started acting "erratically" after allegedly trying to assault someone at a gym.

His personal physician Dr Michael Farzam then reportedly called 911 and reported that he was suffering from "temporary psychosis due to sleep deprivation and dehydration" and that he was placed under a 5150 psychiatric hold.

Section 5150 in the California Welfare and Institutions Code allows a qualified officer or clinician to confine a person suspected of a mental disorder which makes them a danger to themselves.

Dr Farzam is believed to have told police that Kanye wasn't violent but would likely become so when police came to assist in his hospitalisation.

Kanye's spokespeople are remaining tight-lipped on the drama, although police have confirmed a man matching West's description was transported without incident by paramedics to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on Monday afternoon (local time).

The hospitalisation follows an escalation in Kanye's concert rants that reached a pinnacle on the weekend with attacks on his friends Beyonce and Jay Z.
