US President-elect Donald Trump is demanding an apology from the cast of Hamilton after they asked his Vice President to "uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us".

Mike Pence attended a performance of the Broadway musical in New York on Friday night (local time).

After thanking Mr Pence for coming, cast member Brandon Victor Dixon (Aaron Burr) said he hoped the show inspired Mr Pence to "uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us".

"We sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents - or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir," Dixon said as the crowd applauded.

"We truly thank you for sharing this show - this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men, women of different colours, creeds and orientations."

Mr Pence is opposed to gay marriage, and in the past has advocated for "conversion therapy programs" to change people's sexual orientation.

The statement stirred up Mr Trump, who said on Twitter the cast "harassed" Mr Pence, whom he called a "very good man". Mr Trump is demanding an apology.

The cast was defended by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, saying he was "proud" of the cast, singling out Dixon.

According to social media reports, Mr Pence was recognised shortly after arriving at the theatre and was greeted with a mix of cheers and boos.
