KFC's infamous bun-less burger, the Double Down, will be back on the menu next week.

From Tuesday, the chain will sell not just the original, but 'Zinger' and 'Grilled' variations.

“KFC received a phenomenal number of requests, via Facebook and Twitter, to bring the Double Down back after it featured on the menu last year," says general manager Brent Kitto.

"We’re excited to be able to once again offer this taste sensation to our customers, along with the tasty Zinger and Grilled options."

Mr Kitto says the Double Down is the most successful burger in the chain's history, and New Zealanders ate the most per capita of any country.

The high-calorie burger was slammed by health experts, but some praised it for its high level of protein and low carbohydrates, saying it was an ideal fast food for type 2 diabetics.

“While the Double Down serves up double the flavour, Double Down is actually lower in calories and fat than a number of other burgers already on the market,” says Mr Kitto.

Dunedinites were treated to a single weekend of Double Downs back in April.

KFC owner Restaurant Brands' total sales were down 2.7 percent in May, a drop attributed to last year's successful Double Down campaign.
