The first four films of the 2014 New Zealand International Film Festival have been announced, and they all rock.

Pulp, 20,000 Days On Earth, Frank and Jimi: All Is By My Side will be part of this year's festival, which kicks off in Auckland on July 17.

Florian Habicht's Pulp is a documentary on the 'Common People' hitmakers as they play their last UK concert in 2012. It features its members sharing their personal thoughts on fame, love, mortality and car maintenance.

Kiwi filmmaker Habicht's Love Story opened the 2011 festival and his other films include Kaikohe Demolition, Woodenhead and Land of the Long White Cloud.

Jimi: All Is By My Side stars Andre 3000 as Hendrix in a portrait of the young man in 1966 and '67, before he was a rock icon. The film presents an intimate portrayal of the sensitive, struggling guitarist on the verge of becoming a rock legend.

20,000 Days On Earth is a documentary on musician/filmmaker Nick Cave, with directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard following as he talks to his on-screen shrink, discusses meaningful life-changing events and chauffeurs friends around Brighton.

Offbeat comedy Frank centres on a young wannabe musician who finds himself out of his depth when he joins an avant-garde pop band. It stars Michael Fassbender and Domhnall Gleeson.

"Music has always been a crucial part of the celebration at NZIFF," says festival director Bill Gosden.

"The evidence to date makes it very clear that 2014 will be no exception. I could not be happier that one of these first announcements is the work of our very own Florian Habicht."

The 2014 New Zealand International Film Festival official website was launched today and more selection announcements will be made soon.
