George Clooney has become the latest big name to criticise real estate tycoon-turned-US presidential hopeful Donald Trump for "idiotic" remarks he recently made about Mexican immigrants in America.

The former The Apprentice boss sparked a storm of controversy in June, when he announced his run for the White House and outlined plans to build a big wall along the US/Mexico border to keep out illegal immigrants, sensationally claiming many are "rapists" and drug dealers who only bring crime into the country.

Trump's comments prompted a backlash from a slew of stars, particularly in the Latin American community, with celebrities including Eva Longoria, Ricky Martin, Pitbull and George Lopez all speaking out to chastise the outspoken Republican.

Now Clooney has weighed in on the hot topic, taking aim at Trump and dismissing the business mogul's political ambitions during the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of his new political drama Our Brand Is Crisis.

Speaking to reporters, he said, "Clearly, what he said is idiotic. Anybody who says as intolerant words as those should be laughed at, and that's pretty much (what) I think eventually history will do."
