Harrison Ford clipped a tree and crashed his vintage fighter plane on a golf course as he attempted to make an emergency landing at Santa Monica Municipal Airport in California last week, according to a National Transportation Safety Board preliminary investigation.

The movie star reported engine failure shortly after take-off from the airport and requested an immediate return, but he was unable to make it.

In the report, NTSB officials claim, "The pilot initiated a left turn back towards the airport; the airplane subsequently struck the top of a tall tree prior to impacting the ground in an open area of a golf course, about 800 feet southwest of the approach end of runway three."

Ford was seriously injured in the crash but is recovering in hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.

The airplane sustained "substantial damage to both wings and the fuselage", according to the NTSB.
