New Zealand's music industry will soon be in full song because it's awards night at the Vector Arena.
“There’s something quite special about the New Zealand Music Awards for me,” says singer Kimbra. “It’s my home, it’s where everything started for me so there’s something a little more sentimental about these awards.”
The songstress from Hamilton has had a massive year of touring, topping a few charts on the way. Her collaboration with Aussie artist Gotye went to number one in the UK and US markets, paving the way for the international release of her own debut album Vows.
Kimbra's no stranger to winners podiums, taking an Aria off the Aussies for best female artist, and she goes into tonight's New Zealand Music Awards with the most nominations.
One behind her is the band Six60. They too have had a huge year - their debut album went triple platinum, they dominated radio play across the country and they've been touring Europe ever since.
“It’s been an incredible year and to look back where we were at the last music awards to where we are now, is pretty special,” says band member Chris Mac.
They were just tourists at last year's awards, but not this year - they're up for all the biggies including best album, best group and best single.
“It’s been really cool to have that recognition from the industry, we're not expecting anything, it’s just a chance to wind down after this crazy year and celebrate with friends and family - in saying that, it'd be pretty cool to have that bling on the mantelpiece,” says fellow band member Matiu Walters.
