Taika Waititi's latest Kiwi comedy is Hunt for the Wilderpeople and its New Zealand premiere takes place tonight.

His follow-up to Boy and What We Do in the Shadows, the film is based on the Barry Crump novel Wild Pork and Watercress.

Waititi calls it his most ambitious and most accessible film yet and says it is a tribute to classic Kiwi films.

"Smash Palace, Sleeping Dogs, It Came a Hot Friday, Goodbye Pork Pie; I keep saying, this is like a love letter to all those films," says Waititi.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople stars Julian Dennison and Sam Neill as a rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go missing in the bush and spark a national manhunt.

"I wouldn't say it's a family film, but it's definitely a film the family can enjoy," says Waititi.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople opens at cinemas nationwide tomorrow.
