JJ Abrams, the director of the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, has snapped up the filming rights for Tavis Smiley's 2014 Martin Luther King Jr book Death to a King.

Abrams and his partners at production company Bad Robot have teamed up with Warner Bros executives to take on the project, which will chronicle the events leading up to the civil rights leader's 1968 assassination.

It's not yet clear if Abrams and company plan to turn Smiley's book into a film or a mini-series for TV.

Death of a King recounts the story of MLK's last year, during which he clashed with police and activists, was denounced by the media and criticized by the President, and suffered serious attacks on his tactics and person.
