A New Zealand artist who painted a giant mural of the late Prince on a Sydney street wall is fundraising to do the same in Prince's hometown.

Bay of Plenty artist Graham Hoet, also known as Mr G, spent six hours painting the tribute to one of his idols over the weekend, and pictures of the artwork went viral.

After making headlines around the world, Mr G revealed plans to paint a similar dedication, five-stories-high in Paisley Park, Minnesota -- Prince's hometown. And he's seeking sponsorship to enable his dream.

"I grew up with Prince's music, I'm the baby of the family and my older brother was a huge fan so I listened to his records all the time," Mr Hoete told the Daily Mail Australia.

"Some of my favourite memories growing up were listening to that music, seeing all the album artwork."

Like so many others, Mr Hoete was hugely upset at the news of the pop icon's death, and he asked himself how he could honour the creative genius inspired him so much.

"After working full-time as an artist for the last 10 years, I've learned the power of art to help the grieving process."

He has already reached out to the Mayor of Minnesota and spoke to someone who is connected to local government.

Now Mr Hoete is confident that the project will go ahead and deciding which wall in the town is now his main focus.
