New Zealand comedian Tape Face has been knocked out of the grand finale of America's Got Talent 2016 following a performance that involved putting a toilet seat on Mel B's head.

The competition was instead won by 12-year-old ukulele player Grace VanderWaal, who claims a US$1 million prize and will headline a show on the Las Vegas strip.

Tape Face, real name Sam Willis, wowed on the hit talent show with his comedic mime performances - receiving a unanimous "yes" from all judges at his June debut and winning a hotly contested fan vote to advance to the finals.

Willis began performing as a busker in Christchurch before winning The People's Choice Award at the World Buskers Festival in 2008.

The Boy with Tape on his Face show developed from there, and he has sold out shows around the world, before changing the name to Tape Face and entering America's Got Talent.
