Pop-star Lady Gaga has announced her return to the mainstream circuit with a clever and artful display on social media.

Announcing the title of her new pop single - 'Perfect Illusion' - Gaga took to social media, collaging her Instagram account with a colourful tease of the track. She also uploaded a similarly hyperdelic clip to her Twitter and Facebook.

'Perfect Illusion' will be the first lead pop single released by the singer since 2013, who has most recently been dabbling in jazz classics and acting, winning a Grammy for her joint album Cheek to Cheek and a Golden Globe for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel.

She was also Oscar-nominated this year for her track 'Til It Happens to You' from American doco The Hunting Ground.

'Perfect Illusion' is set to appear on Gaga's forthcoming, as-yet-untitled, fifth studio album - dubbed 'LG5' by her fans.

Speaking with iHeartRadio, the singer said "The song is about modern ecstasy. We found our sweet, simple, ragey way of saying it. I get this sick adrenaline rush every time I hear it."

Acclaimed producers Mark Ronson and Tame Impala's Kevin Parker also took over their social media accounts with colourful promotion of the track, seemingly confirming their involvement.

This follows statements by both who indicated they would be adding their talents to the pop singer's new album.

There is speculation that Gaga will debut the track at the MTV Video Music Awards on August 28.

The single is set for release in September.
