Australian artist Chet Faker is the first act announced for the 2017 St Jerome's Laneway Festival.

The Auckland festival is confirmed for Monday January 30, 2017, with the first line-up being announced on Wednesday September 14.

This isn't the only announcement for the talented musician. He has forgone his alias and will now write, produce, record and perform under his real name, Nick Murphy.

Murphy has built a strong reputation under his alias - his critically acclaimed debut album Built on Glass peaked at number 6 on the NZ charts.

He is also well-known internationally, selling out headline tours and playing major festivals throughout Europe, Asia and North America including main sets at Coachella, Glastonbury, Primavera Sound and more.

He has shared a preview of his new sound on track 'Fear Less' - a mix of what he says are old and new influences.

Murphy is expected to perform a dynamic show, pulling from his existing catalogue and showcasing new material.

The festival also has a new home, moving to the Albert Park precinct.

"Laneway Festival is as much about the environment as it is about the music and this new site allows us to deliver everything we know our guests need for a great festival experience," says festival co-promoter Mark Kneebone.

"Music fans can come and hear some of the most exciting music acts on the planet, have plenty of space to relax in the shade under the beautiful trees and have a really amazing day," he said.
