The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) says it is not investigating Brad Pitt over child abuse allegations, contrary to reports.

Following news of the actor being divorced by Angelina Jolie, reports were published over an incident on the couple's private jet on September 14 - a day before the papers were filed.

A lawyer for Jolie said her decision to divorce was made "for the health of the family".

TMZ claimed the LAPD and LA County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) were looking into the September 14 incident, in which Pitt allegedly became "verbally abusive and physical" with his children.

While the LAPD has shot down their involvement in the investigation, a DCFS spokesperson stated: "We're prohibited by law from disclosing case specific information or even identifying any involvement with any client."

Meanwhile, comedian and TV star Chelsea Handler has labelled Jolie a "f**king lunatic" following the divorce news.

On her Netflix show Chelsea, Handler joked that Pitt needed to "self-medicate" because he lived with "85 kids" and married a "f**king lunatic".

A staunch friend of Jennifer Aniston, Handler has also previously labelled Jolie a "homewrecker" and a "demon".
