LCD Soundsystem star James Murphy has opened up about his troubled youth - he was prone to fits of violence as a teenager and "hurt a few kids pretty bad".

The musician admits his early years growing up in New Jersey were racked with problems, as he became embroiled in so many fights during his time at high school.

And Murphy, 40, is glad he eventually learned to control his anger - because losing his temper had frightening consequences.

He says, "I used to get in fights a lot at high school. I was sort of fixated on fairness when I was 15 and I sort of looked wussy. But I would often get into fights whenever things seemed unfair, and I was notorious for being a really, really crazy fighter. I hurt a few kids pretty bad. I broke one kid's orbital bone (eye socket). I broke one person's arm. Broke some ribs. I was the kind of person who would sit on a guy's chest and just keep hitting him. I just got very upset any time someone would antagonise me to the point of fighting, and I wanted to teach them a lesson. I kind of got psychotic, actually."
