When it comes to New Zealand music, you don't get much more well-known than the Finns.

So far this year, Neil Finn has already put out a new album, and now his son, Liam, has followed suit with a record called The Nihilist.

It’s Liam’s third solo album, but he produced his dad's latest as well and says he has learnt from watching the older Finn work.

“That's the one thing I've learnt – it's never going to get any easier,” he says. “Watching dad – it's always going to be really intense!”

Liam's album is peppered with his usual dark sense of humour. The first video depicts a made-up holiday, sort of like Christmas, but different.

“This one is called ‘Jubilancy Day’ and we celebrate Papa Jubilee, which is a kind of rodent rat,” he says.

He made the video in the US, and he has lived in New York City now for two rounds of elections.

“You feel like you're in a movie. I feel like I’m in Ghostbusters all the time, which is awesome.”

But he says New Zealand, with its beaches and dogs, is always a nice time-out.

“I certainly hadn't discovered [before moving to the US] the heights of anxiety I could reach, just through seeing someone like Sarah Palin talk on television!”

All that American angst has not stifled his creativity.

“I have a big fear about contributing to the mediocrity of the music world,” he says.

And he plays all 67 of the instruments heard on the new album.
