She's been unavoidable this year, topping charts here and around the world – but it seems we still can't get enough of Ella Yellich-O'Connor, better-known as Lorde.

The 17-year-old's megahit 'Royals' was streamed by Kiwis more times this year than any other song on Spotify, beating out international superstars like Daft Punk and Robin Thicke.

"It's amazing to see young artists like Lorde becoming sensations almost overnight," says Steve Savoca, head of content at Spotify.

"She's a truly thrilling discovery for Spotify users and will help to re-shape the pop music landscape."

Lorde was also the most-streamed artist overall, but as her album Pure Heroine arrived relatively late in the year, much of the thanks goes to her debut EP, The Love Club, which came out in March.

The most popular album on Spotify this year in New Zealand was rap duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' The Heist. They were also the world's pick, getting more plays than runners-up Avicii and Daft Punk.

Lorde was also named Spotify's most viral new artist worldwide, and 'Get Lucky' by Daft Punk the most viral new track.
