Veteran actor Mandy Patinkin is preparing to get animated to voice the family patriarch in the latest The Smurfs movie.

The Homeland star is in final negotiations to step behind the studio microphone to portray Papa Smurf, the character previously voiced by Jonathan Winters in the Smurfs films in 2011 and 2013, which were a mix of live-action and animation.

Gnomeo & Juliet filmmaker Kelly Asbury will direct the new all-animated project, which will detail the origins of the blue creatures created by Belgian comic book artist Pierre 'Peyo' Culliford.

The Smurfs is due for release in August, 2016, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The role will be Patinkin's first in a major animated film - he previously lent his vocals to the English-language translation of Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises and independent movie Jock the Hero Dog.
