Marmite crisis: black gold hits the black market

A thriving black market is developing for the country's dwindling supplies of Marmite.

Dozens of people have listed jars of Marmite on TradeMe – one seller's put a 'buy now' price of $100 on a 500g container of "black gold" – and it still asking $5 for postage.

Another person is trying to sell a jar that's two-thirds empty, promising: "There has been no double dipping with the butter knife, this is clean Marmite."

And $50 will get you a jar of 'Limited Edition Nek Minute Marmite', which appears to be just ordinary marmite accompanied by a picture of the 'Nek Minute' guy, "only one knife full missing (eaten by Nek Minute)".

New Zealand is fast running out of Marmite because Sanitarium has had to close its Christchurch factory due to earthquake damage.

The company says there will be no new supplies until later in July.
