Matthew McConaughey agrees this career has had a change of direction, but says it's all part of the ride: "I don't see it as much as a 'then' and a 'now', I definitely changed a gear, and started making some different choices, but it all seems like part of the evoluton to me," McConaughey told 3 News.
McConaughey has already won a Golden Globe for his role as Ron Woodroof, a bullrider who tested HIV positive in 1985. He then dedicated his life to importing the medication he and others needed to stay alive.
He says he could understand the paranoia around HIV/AIDS in the 80s, as he was a teenager then. "And I remember going to doctors going, 'Give me the straight dope. I am heterosexual, I am not doing drugs, I am not having sex with women doing drugs, I am not having sex with prostitution, give me some numbers. Protected sex. Unprotected sex'. And there was real fear, as no one had the same answer."
