Matthew McConaughey was crestfallen after discovering a prestigious child pageant win in his youth was a big family lie.

The Oscar-winning actor's mother told him he was crowned Little Mr Texas in the late 1970s and he delighted in impressing his friends and teachers with the boast.

However, he recently discovered his trophy was a runner-up prize.

McConaughey tells UK talk show host Graham Norton, "My mum told me I won Little Mr Texas when I was eight and over the years I've told everyone else. It was only when I looked closely at the photo of me holding the trophy that I saw it said, 'Little Mr Texas Runner-Up'. When I asked my mum, she said, 'They must have misprinted it!'"
