Mel Gibson's latest directorial outing Hacksaw Ridge will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.

The film was shot last year in Australia using various locations across New South Wales, and stars Andrew Garfield, Vince Vaughn and Sam Worthington along with Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer and Rachel Griffiths.

Hacksaw Ridge is the true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) who was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong.

In Okinawa, during the bloodiest battle of WWII, Doss saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the first conscientious objector awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour.

The film marks Gibson's return to directing since the Academy Award nominated Apocalypto in 2006.

Hacksaw Ridge opens across Australia and New Zealand on November 3.
