Metallica, Jimmy Fallon and the Roots have performed a classroom jam version of 'Enter Sandman', the 1991 metal anthem.

Using kazoos and plastic toy instruments, the collective bashed out a ridiculous version of the thrash metal band's biggest-ever single, all grinning from ear to ear.

Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, Metallica's 10th album, was released today and their appearance on The Tonight Show formed part of a bold marketing campaign that also saw the release of 10 new music videos yesterday.

From an assortment of different directors, the official music videos are diverse offerings - but so far the Fallon jam appears to be more popular than any of them.

Although no New Zealand stores appeared to be participating, in North America the new album is going on sale at midnight as part of a 'Blackened Friday' event.

Hardwired… to Self-Destruct is in Kiwi stores today and is also available on Spotify.
